TUMIKI Fighters
Kenta Cho, ABA GamesShoot 'em up5.03 MBClick here to download

Tumiki Fighters is a shooter by Kenta Cho that is quite different compared to his other efforts. Just about all the objects in the game are made out of colorful blocks, including your own fighter plane.

Enemy ships that have been destroyed will break into pieces. These parts can be collected by simply touching them, and they will act as extensions to your own fighter plane. Your attack strength increases with each part you collect, although they will fall apart if an enemy bullet hits it.

You can retract the enemy ship parts by holding down the X key, although no further parts can be picked up until you release the button.

In ASCIIpOrtal you can fire up to two portals with your hand-held portal device, then enter through one before coming out of the other for some mind-bending teleportation effect. Some of the puzzles in this 2D remake of Valve's Portal include manipulating switches using blocks, placing portals on the other side of chain links, dodging boulders before they crush you, and avoiding laser fields that will burn your flesh instantly on contact.

Links to binaries for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems all available from the Cymon's Games site.

Rescue: The Beagles is a new platformer by the developer of Counterclockwise and Ablation, where the objective is to save the required number of dogs from the hands of evil researchers in each stage to progress. Press the up arrow key to jump or climb upwards, which is only applicable if your character can reach the platform above him or her. Press the down arrow key to descend downwards, or tap the same button twice in quick succession to use a parachute when you have at least one in possession. You lose a life if you fall from too high of a height, touch a red lip balm or allow a beagle to go unrescued.

Press the up arrow key twice to use a rope. Ropes are among some of the items which can be collected as you make your way forward in search of more beagles. Press the Z key or space key to throw an owl at enemies, and use the P key to pause the game.

Sombreros is an arcade shooter made for Arthur Lee's Action 52 remake challenge, where you play as a Mexican gunslinger who has to retrieve a couple of giant hats from the bad guys. Ammo is unlimited in the game, and you can also call upon your sombrero power to pause time and mark enemies for a round of quick fire shots. Doing this depletes your sombrero gauge, but you can replenish it by collecting hats from defeated outlaws.

You won't just be shooting at henchmen throughout the entire game. There are a number of occasions where you have to duel with one or more gunslingers, and some levels have doors that you have to break down before you can proceed. The obligatory boss fights are there as well, featuring gang leaders who can take more damage than the common criminal.

Vacant Ark
BusterShoot 'em up9.83 MBClick here to download
(external link)

Vacant Ark is a strange departure from standard horizontal shooters, featuring excellent sprite designs by Buster but employing a slightly awkward gameplay system. You can only store and use up to six bullets at any time, although this supply can be replenished by collecting blue gems from vanquished enemies.

You lose all your energy stock if an enemy bullet grazes your on-screen character. A life is lost if you have no energy left when receiving damage. Your pod can also turn enemy bullets into gems when not in use for a few seconds.

Each end level boss requires a different strategy to beat. Some weapons are more effective in certain situations. You can only progress to the next zone if none of the bosses escape.

Stair Dismount is a computer game made by Jetro Lauha of tAAt. It is a physics game where the goal is maximising the damage done to a 3D stick figure. The player causes damage by briefly applying a force to the figure to make it fall down a staircase.

The stick figure's falls are accompanied by various sound effects - cracks, wails and groans - as it makes its way to the bottom. Stair Dismount uses ragdoll physics, so the figure is very floppy as it falls, like a ragdoll.

The game was first published in Assembly 2002, where it won the first prize in the game development competition. The newest version, 1.0.3, is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Mogura 2
Krobon StationShoot 'em up15.8 MBClick here to download

Mogura 2 is an excellent horizontal shooter created by Krobon Station, featuring two characters with different abilities and weapons. Both gets a standard shield which can be activated using the X key. Hold the Z key to shoot, and tap the C key to initiate a special attack. Press the left control key to change the way your weapon operates.

A tutorial can be accessed from the main menu by selecting the third option. The second offers a difficulty setting. After picking a character, you can choose to either start from the first level or continue from the last stage attempted.

Installation can be a bit of a hassle but the effort is worth it. Rename the largest executable and cca file to the same name, then repeat for the smallest file. For example mogura2.exe, mogura2.cca, config.exe and config.cca.

Shoot First
Beau Blyth, TeknogamesAction/Arcade3.60 MBClick here to download

Shoot First is an action game with roguelike elements, featuring procedurally generated levels, an automap system, two-player co-op mode, an online high score table, and even AI-controlled companions to help you out during heated gunfights with denizens of the dungeon. Your character can only carry one weapon at a time, and three other equipment that you acquire during your adventure. Weapons are upgraded automatically after a prolonged period of use, but the bonuses don't carry over when you switch to another gun.

Like any roguelike, your objective here is to descend the staircase that leads to the next level. Sometimes the staircase is blocked by a locked door, so you must first find the yellow key hidden somewhere in the dungeon before proceeding to the exit.

Red potions can be quaffed to restore a tiny bit of health, and rescuing damsels in distress also have the same effect on your hero. There's no button to drop an item in your inventory, but you can swap them out when the inventory slots are full by picking up an object on the ground.

Underside, The
The Podunkian, Arthur LeePlatformer7.76 MBClick here to download

The Underside is an exploration-based action platformer in the vein of games like Castlevania, Metroid, and Cave Story. However, unlike most other games in this genre, the gameplay is driven more by plot than by free-roaming exploration.

Graphics and engine are completely original. The plot revolves around a character named Ip who must escape from the underside, and prevent the world from being destroyed while he's at it. Characters, plot strands, and dialogue are heavily inspired by Earthbound, and are quirky, whimsical, and sometimes a little strange as well.

Captain Forever

In Captain Forever, you're the captain of a ship named Nemesis, stranded in space without a single clue about your current whereabouts. Fortunately an info buoy is around to help, providing you with some information about the sector you are in and supplying repair modules to rebuild your ship.

By destroying enemy ships with your default laser weapon, you can cause them to drop ship parts that can be attached to your own ship. Additional ship plating, extra weapons and increased thruster power are just some of the benefits to be gained from salvaging intact modules.
