CAGE STG is actually a pretty good vertical shooter created in the style of Hudson Soft's Star Soldier, and though the trial version only features three playable stages the game does not limit your playtime by any means. You even get to unlock additional characters to use if you manage to fulfill a condition or two by the end of the third node.
To upgrade your default weapon, simply grab the small blue gems that appear occasionally when you've vanquished an entire wave of enemies.

Captain Kickass is a new arena shooter by Nobody which mimics gameplay elements from Geometry Wars and several other similar arcade games. Firing is automatic, while the ship follows your cursor around hence cursor keys are never needed.
Rotate your firing direction left or right by using the mouse buttons. Items can be collected immediately when they appear or be left alone to wander the screen until absolutely needed. Delay power-up effects by holding down the middle mouse button.

Carnage Street is a simple 2D shooter in which you play as a hero who has to protect his city from a zombie invasion. There are only two status indicators that you have to worry about, those being your life and the state of the city itself. The game ends if you are too injured to continue, or a hundred zombies or more made it through the city's one-man defense line.
The red gauge at the bottom of the screen shows your current level, which can be increased by dispatching more zombies. The higher the level, the more zombies will appear but you will score more as well, and more destructive weapons will appear for you to collect.

Cathode Raygun is jph's Shmup Dev competition entry that was made with wonky controls on purpose. The objective of the game is to collect thirty-two pods with the help of a tractor beam that can be activated by pressing the X key.
Once you have collected enough pods, the final boss encounter begins. Pretty short but quite fun nonetheless.

Cavadius is a one level trial edition remake of Gradius, but in a vertical format and with more bullets introduced. The game can be played in full screen mode by pressing the F4 key, though a music pack has to be downloaded as well for it to work without any errors. Fortunately this file is available from the same download page.

Ceramic Shooter is an abstract action game where players will have to actively avoid destroying objects on screen while attempting to pilot a malfunctioning ship. The clock is ticking and mistakes are costly, plus you'll need all the seconds you can muster for the boss encounters waiting for you near the end of each level.
Use the cursor keys to dodge objects, and press the space key to pause the game at any time. The game has seven stages in total, not including the practice and survival modes.
