This Colour Blindness version contains high contrast sprites, but essentially the same gameplay as the original release.

Warning Forever

Warning Forever is a decent shooter by Hikoza T Ohkubo which has remained as his most popular work to date.

The objective of the game is to defeat a seemingly endless number of huge motherships, with every successive boss encounter harder than the previous. Surviving each battle will net you an additional thirty seconds to add to your initial three minutes of play time.

Wavives
Age ZeroShoot 'em up176 MBClick here to download

Wavives is a 2D arena shooter consisting of only three levels, each separated by an end level boss which you have to defeat to progress to the next stage. The creature that you control will lose a life when it is overwhelmed by the random objects that populate the area, but you can regain lives by collecting items that resemble red cherries seen from the top.

Your primary weapon shoots out alphabets that explode after a few seconds, so it is wise to stay clear of their proximity after letting a couple loose in the wild. The secondary attack are letters that suck in just about anything in a small perimeter, and there is a greater chance of causing more damage to your enemies if you alternate between both shots instead of just depending on your explosives to blow stuff up. There is also a limit to how many alphabets you can have on the screen at any time, and it is recommended that you avoid holding down either shot button for too long or you'd be left with no ammunition to use for a couple of seconds.

You might want to watch the trailer video first before downloading the game, since each stage takes less than five minutes to beat and the download size for the file is close to 200 MB.

White Butterfly
Linley HenzellShoot 'em up3.83 MBClick here to download
(external link)

White Butterfly is a vertical shooter created by Linley Henzell, developer of the excellent Dungeon Crawl and Garden of Coloured Lights. Players begin the game by choosing one of the four available ships to pilot, with a fifth one only unlocked after you've completed the final stage.

Use the cursor keys to move, press the Z key to shoot, and hold the X key to fire your secondary weapon. A third attack can be executed by pressing the Z and X key together. Hold the left shift key to move your ship around at a lower speed. Use the escape key to access the pause and quit menu.

You would need to level up all three attacks for automatic weapon upgrades. Using just one type of shot throughout the game does not upgrade the weapon, even though it continues to gain a new level after repeated usage.

There are three long stages to play in total.

Winged Gear
ZAPShoot 'em up9.56 MBClick here to download

Winged Gear is another superb freeware title from Japan that could be described as a mix of Smash TV and SHMUP-type gameplay elements. The game is essentially a top down shooter where you have to guide a ship from room to room full of enemies to shoot at.

You're only allowed to exit a room once it has been cleared of every single hostile unit. There's a time limit that makes matter difficult, but it is usually replenished when you enter a new room.

Special items can be collected to increases your ship's firepower for a short while or replenish your bomb supply. The developers have also thrown in a two player mode as an added bonus.

Winglancer
ZAPShoot 'em up0.22 MBClick here to download

Winglancer is one of those original shooters that was made to look like something from the 8-bit era. High frame rates, excellent background music and the sort of frantic gameplay we've come to expect from Japanese SHMUPs, they're all here.

Choose from three ships with different weapon and speed configurations to suit your preference. Most times I'd just pick the blue one. There's not much room to navigate around bullets, so every little speed boost counts. No power-ups to speak of as well, although bonuses in the form of twinkling stars can be collected to add up to your score.

You will encounter bosses at the end of each sub-area, and there is a boss mode for any player looking for a challenge.

The game features six playable levels plus several unlockable modes which can only be acquired by collecting medals through achievements.
