Z-LOCK
IsshikiShoot 'em up5.74 MBClick here to download

Z-LOCK is another surprisingly good freeware shooter from Japan. Enemy ships will attempt to get a lock on your position before shooting at your craft, giving you ample opportunities to dodge bullet patterns.

Great use of minimal graphics, cool effects and a rocking soundtrack rounds up the package.

Z-Tack

danjo's Z-Tack remake is an update of the Atari 2600 release, in which the player has to destroy buildings on the surface of a planet while dodging the missiles they launch in retaliation to your attacks.

Use both cursor and shift keys to fire in a certain direction. Shots can be fired sideways as well.

Zero Hour
(demo)
pixeltheaterShoot 'em up4.55 MBClick here to download

Zero Hour is a decent shooter by pixeltheather, unfortunately it's also a work in progress featuring just one level.

Only two buttons are needed to play this game. Holding down the primary shot button will halve the speed of your ship in exchange for a rapid fire mode. Press X to launch your smart bomb.

Up to six power-ups can be collected to upgrade your firepower. It does have a nice Raiden feel to it, especially during the second half of the demo.

A Flash-enabled browser is required to view the web site.

Zero Point
Alaric HolbertonShoot 'em up25.1 MBClick here to download

Zero Point is an impressive-looking horizontal shooter created with the Game Maker engine, and consists of one short level in the current build. Use the cursor keys to move, and hold the left control key to shoot. Your special attack gauge automatically charges up when no shots are fired from your ship, indicated by a red bar at the bottom left of the screen.

The lite version is missing plenty of background graphics and sound, and should only be downloaded as a last resort. Note that the game will only run properly on graphic adapters which are capable of supporting a resolution of 1280 by 960 or higher.

Zillion Beatz is a new vertical shooter by RezetiA, featuring one short level but with five different difficulty settings. The needless configuration and armory shop from Pladzma has been ditched, allowing folks who don't speak Japanese to sample some of the gameplay on offer with little hassle.

Either ship is outfitted with two primary weapons, switchable using the C key. Hold the Z key to shoot, and press the X key to launch a bomb. The type of bomb launched depends on the current primary weapon in use, but still shares the same slot. It's possible to orient the option position by moving your ship around, then locking them in their current alignment by holding the Z key.

Only the weapon currently in use will be upgraded when a power-up is collected. Options can be aligned right in front of your ship by holding the W key.

Zugya
Chinchilla SofthouseShoot 'em up0.66 MBClick here to download

Zugya is an excellent shooter from Chinchilla Softhouse that can be described as Robotron: 2084 in space. Arrow keys control the ship's movement, and your shot direction is locked when you hold down the X key. Pressing the C key will activate your plasma charge, which is basically a short moment of invincibility.

Your main targets are the space stations which you have to destroy by shooting at it's core. It won't be easy as they're usually protected by substations equipped with all sorts of defensive weapons. Some of the substations carry power-ups which you can collect to boost your spread shot.

When the game starts, click on the joypad tab, input patch and the largest button to configure default keyboard controls.
