Warning: Contains strong language and graphic scenes.

The White Chamber: International Edition is a new version of Studio Trophis' debut effort. Smaller than it's predecessor, it includes four new endings and voice acting as well.

There are plenty of easter eggs to be found, and some are hinted at the end of each adventure. Fans of the original certainly won't be disappointed with the extras.

The Hive

In The Hive you play as Alex Rig, a reporter who was investigating a missing persons case when he discovers a heavily-fortified research facility while snooping around for clues. Similar to Iji, Prince of Persia and Flashback, Alex will be doing a lot of climbing up platforms and crawling through air vents to find ammunition or health-replenishing items that he can keep in his inventory for later use.

The taser he carries is effective enough against guards at close range, but only rifles and shotguns can protect him from being overwhelmed by chasing mutants that are more resilient to bullet damage. Both the protagonist's health and his weapons can be upgraded in small increments, provided that you manage to locate the special items required to level up their stats.

The controls might feel clunky and unresponsive at first, but if you give the game a chance to impress it could even suprise you with its high production values in just about every other area. This 2D platformer was created by Vanni del Moral as his entry for submission to the YoYo Games' 'Discovery' competition.

As you wander through the world of PlayPen, clicking from picture to picture by depressing your left mouse button whenever you find an interesting text prompt hidden in the images, you visit places, people, ideas and imaginings created by other players. Sometimes a text prompt will include the words 'Draw new page'. If you follow one of these prompts, you'll find yourself looking at an empty image and a simple set of drawing tools. This is your opportunity to get creative.

Houkaimura

Houkaimura (Breaking Town) is an action platformer that plays similarly to the Ghosts 'n Goblins series, where you have to guide an eggplant-headed character through eight levels packed with enemies, traps and boss encounters.

There are a large selection of weapons that you can find and collect, although players are limited to the use of just one type of weapon at any time. Not an easy game, but completely beatable in under an hour or less with repeated tries. You can also switch between windowed and full screen mode by pressing the Left Alt and Enter key.

Mondo Medicals
cactusAction/Arcade2.96 MBClick here to download

Mondo Medicals could be described as an illogical puzzle game played from a first person view, with plenty of bizarre elements. Most of the levels are designed to confuse you, and the solutions aren't always that easy to figure out. Move around with the arrow keys and press Z to interact with stuff. There are in game instructions, but they might not be that easy to interpret. There are eight levels total.

Demolition Gunner: In Search and Destroy

Think Under Defeat, but with 2D sprites. Demolition Gunner: In Search and Destroy was originally developed for a three minute gameplay competition, then turned into a complete production featuring seven stages and obligatory boss encounters.

These battles last only twenty seconds each, so there won't be much of a struggle beating them assuming that you're good at dodging an insane number of bullets. Press the Z key to shoot, or hold the X key for a few seconds before releasing the button to launch a napalm bomb. Click on the first link after the title to download.

Cave Story
- Windows, Mac, Linux
PixelPlatformer0.88 MBClick here to download

Cave Story is a freeware sidescrolling platformer title created by Daisuke Amaya, art-name Pixel. You control a cute little amnesiac who runs around helping out these rabbit-ish creatures called Mimigas while trying to find your way out of the giant cave inside the floating island which makes up the game's setting.

You can expand your health meter by collecting Life Capsules in similar fashion to Metroid games, while you can get stronger by collecting energy to boost your firearms' output. Each weapon can be built up to the maximum level fairly quickly, but taking damage will drain energy from its experience meter, sometimes causing it to level down. Given how quickly they power up this only tends to be an issue during boss fights, and even then there's usually plenty of opportunities for collecting more weapon energy.

The game has loads of secrets, too. For a freeware Japanese platformer, it's fairly lengthy and has quite a large amount of text. We're also talking three very different endings, plenty of plot, and quite a cast of charming characters. It really is a superb little gem.

Desktop Dungeons
Rodain JoubertRPG3.22 MBClick here to download

Desktop Dungeon is a puzzle-based roguelike with an emphasis on resource management, where the health of your adventurer is restored by walking into unexplored rooms or corridors. You can choose to engage an enemy immediately upon finding them, or save the tougher encounters for later after you've gained some battle experience with weaker inhabitants of the dungeon first. That is basically the gist of the game, yet once you've spent about an hour or two with it you'd realize that Desktop Dungeon has plenty of complexity to offer anyone who is willing to learn the advanced strategies, bonuses and random elements that Nandrew has implemented in this gem of a time sink.

There is only one floor to play and a boss character is hiding somewhere in the area, although you can retire from your quest at any time and have the final score tabulated based on your actions and achievements. Players can switch between windowed and full screen mode using the F4 function key.

Zen Bondage
Moppi ProductionsPuzzle23.2 MBClick here to download

Zen Bondage is an untimed, unscored puzzle game in which you must wrap a long cord along a variety of 3D shapes such as a turtle, snake, and rabbit. The rope itself emits a dye that colors the object. The goal is to completely change the color of the entire object, though the only reward is the gameplay itself.
