Elements

Elements is a strategy-based fantasy card game that features both single-player and online multiplayer modes, deck building options, and no micropayments needed for acquiring new cards.

There are twelve elements to specialize in, and you can customize your deck even further after winning matches and spinning for rare cards. The objective of the game is basically to reduce your opponent's hit points to zero and win the duel before he does the same to you. An elemental master can also lose the duel if he or she runs out of cards to play.

The tutorial does a great job of easing new players in quickly. You begin each round by placing pillars to generate quantums, which are then used to cast spells or summon creatures to do your bidding. A white bar will appear under the quantum cost of a card if you have enough quantums of the right colour to put the card into play.

Arachnos

Arachnos is an effort by BootanSoft that is reminiscent of arcade shmups from the early 80's. I could not get this to work full screen, but changing to a lower desktop resolution helps. Controls are shown under the configuration menu. Set BLT scale to double for a larger game display window.

The graphics may appear to be bland but does improve after the second level. Several weapons most commonly found in Konami's classic shooters make their appearance here, such as ripple lasers and options to name but two. Your ship does not explode immediately when hit, allowing options to be recovered after the loss of a life.

End level bosses have several attack patterns, guaranteed to test your bullet dodging skills. The asteroids in stage two can actually be used as a temporary shield during the boss battle, assuming that you don't crash into any of them.

Arcanacra Black Label

Kei Mesuda's Arcanacra Black Label is an update of his earlier browser-based vertical shooter release. Another Mode can now be accessed right from the start, and replays of any level by the top ranked players can be watched even if you have not attempted that particular stage yet. Bomb stock is also increased from three to five.

Click on the screen to add credits. Press the Z key to shoot and hold the shift key to target enemies with your ship's homing lasers. Switch between rapid and spread shot by holding either one or both shoot buttons. The boss of each stage can be beaten easily once your ship has a persistent lock on it, especially when the lock weapon has been upgraded.

Push the right arrow key when the main menu is displayed to view the high score table.

Streets of Rage Remake features a selection of six playable characters spanning the entire series. It's also possible to choose a partner controlled by the CPU if you can't get hold of a friend to join the mayhem. All the moves have been retained with several new additions. Anyone who loved the original won't be disappointed with this effort.

Hoshi Saga is a brain teaser consisting of thirty-six stages in total, each with the same objective of discovering stars which are cleverly hidden by the author. No instructions are given, and players are expected to solve puzzles by experimenting with the elements found in every stage.

Guardian of Paradise

Guardian of Paradise is a fun little Zelda-ish game by Buster, who you may know as the creator of Akuji the Demon. GoP casts you as Tela, a boy whose sister has fallen ill. Nobody knows what's wrong with her, so there seems to be no cure, but legends tell of healing waters in Paradise, so Tela sets out to find the fabled land and save his sister. He encounters elemental spirits along the way, which provide magic, and the basis for the game's puzzle system.

Cedric and the Revolution is an AGS release created by Bernie, who happens to be developer of A Game with a Kitty as well. An old school adventure in the style of classic Lucasarts titles, you play the role of the titular character in his quest to gather enough people for a peaceful demonstration.

Expect a well-written story, witty dialogues and memorable characters brought vividly to life by his distinct art style.

xWUNG Flash
cactusAction/ArcadeBrowserClick here to play
(external link)

This version of xWUNG is a port of cactus' earlier release, originally created using the Game Maker engine. You play by moving the mouse to swing a ball. The ball is attached to a wire, and both of them eliminate enemies on contact. Debris will destroy your ship, so avoid them whenever possible.

There are bosses that appear with regular intervals, and new enemies are introduced as the game progresses. The single power-up found in the game allows you to nullify certain enemy projectiles. Good scores can be achieved by making successive combos.

A House in California
Jake Elliott, Cardboard ComputerAdventureBrowserClick here to play
(external link)

A House in California is a surreal, narrative game about four characters who bring a house to life. These four characters are based the developer's relatives (two grandmothers and two great-grandmothers). The game is inspired aesthetically by Mystery House, developed in 1980 by Roberta and Ken Williams. But whereas Mystery House is a mystery story about greed and murder, A House in California is more like an Imagist poem about family and memory.
