Mighty Jill Off is dessgeega's tribute to the fantastic Bomb Jack series, created with collaborative efforts from James Harvey and Andrew Toups. Players jump with the Z key, and can cancel this action at any time by pressing the same button again for a smaller leap. Tap the Z key rapidly to reduce the speed of descent while in mid-air.

The game can be finished in roughly ten or twenty minutes with the first try.

Winged Gear is another superb freeware title from Japan that could be described as a mix of Smash TV and SHMUP-type gameplay elements. The game is essentially a top down shooter where you have to guide a ship from room to room full of enemies to shoot at.

You're only allowed to exit a room once it has been cleared of every single hostile unit. There's a time limit that makes matter difficult, but it is usually replenished when you enter a new room.

Special items can be collected to increases your ship's firepower for a short while or replenish your bomb supply. The developers have also thrown in a two player mode as an added bonus.

Fraxy

Fraxy is an arena shooter featuring a collection of boss fights, with an editor included to facilitate user creation as well. Use the cursor keys to operate your ship, hold the left mouse button to shoot or press the right mouse button for a temporary speed boost. The left shift key or mouse wheel can be used to swap weapons.

Energy is deducted whenever a shot is fired or the speed boost is activated. Without energy, your ship will explode. Up to five weapon slots can be fitted with your choice of arsenal using the config.exe file, with an explanation for each found in an english text manual in the same folder.

An undocumented item is the Over Soll Power boost, which can be acquired by staying in the core of a power-up item for a couple of seconds. Much like Cho Ren Sha 68k, though this upgrade is a temporary one and useful only when the ship is at full strength.

A specially designed Try mode is available for players to experience preset challenges, while the Free Play mode offers a random run or unlimited practice for experimentation.

Warlock Bentspine
Lazrool, LazraelPlatformer8.12 MBClick here to download

Warlock Bentspine is a 2D platformer that features four stages to beat, each with a set of randomized stages for you to play in whichever direction you decide to tackle a level. At the start of a game you're presented with exits on the left and right side of the room, and if you keep going in one direction you'll face the boss of that stage in the tenth room.

Similar to the Megaman series, players will gain a new weapon to use once they've beaten a stage boss. Besides being able to shoot horizontally and vertically, Mr. Bentspine can also execute double jumps and dash for a short distance.

One thing to note is that the game doesn't automatically save your progress, although a three-digit combination code will be shown at the stage selection menu. This code can be used at the title screen to restore a game from a certain state.

Shift 4

In Shift 4 you're in control of an astronaut whose ship was attacked by a giant squid, forcing our protagonist to make an emergency landing at the closest planet. Waking up to find your family members missing, you decide to explore a deserted facility nearby and search for clues about their current whereabouts.

This particular episode is a little more challenging than previous releases, since players are required to switch between two or more characters often to solve some of the harder puzzles. New gameplay elements such as gravity and contact-sensitive switches are introduced at a steady pace, which is a boon considering that the map is a lot less linear and there is a bit of backtracking to do as well.

Space Phallus is a retro horizontal shooter with a naughty theme, created by the author of Bullet Candy. Here you pilot the disembodied head of a dog, fighting against hordes of enemies in the shape of unmentionable body parts with only an assortment of three weapons at your disposal. Thankfully these weapons can blow away anything that stands in your path, just as long as you use them wisely and sparingly.

There are three stages to play in total, with levels two and three accessible by pressing the 2 or 3 key on your keyboard when the main menu is shown. The game features an online high score table, a special guest appearance by General Custer himself, and is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.
