The Powder Game is an interesting web toy with no specific challenges or goals. The author has offered plenty of variables to experiment with, and continues to add to that number with every update.

Choose an object using the left or right mouse button, then click on the screen to place the selected item.

Gravitron
X-0utShoot 'em up6.65 MBCurrently unavailable

X-0ut returns with a brand new shooter entitled Gravitron, though this one requires a little more tact as it is actually based on Thrust. Instead of transporting pods into the skies you now have to destroy reactors while saving any spacemen wandering on the surface of the planet.

Switch to mouse controls by pressing the tab key when the main menu is shown. Activate the shields next to a fuel pod to fill up your tank. Progress is saved using a pass phrase, plus the nifty level editor facilitate user creations quite well. Expect more content to be posted in the near future.

The Vacuum is a sci-fi adventure game which tells the story of a couple traveling home inside a cargo ship when a pair of explosions set off a chain of events that will forever change both of their lives. The final outcome is influenced by key decisions made by you during the course of your investigation, though most of the endings contain only minor variations in comparison.

Use the tab key to display or hide your objectives. There is an option to skip walk animations with the space key in the settings menu.

Small Worlds is a 2D exploration game created by David Shute, where the controls for your character can be a bit frustrating at times but everything else about the effort shines through. Even if you take all the wrong paths, this adventure is still a rather short one that will only take roughly about fifteen minutes of your time to complete.

Unblade (Record of War) is a 2D platformer in which you play as a frog carrying an indestructible umbrella, on a quest to find a kidnapped princess and rescue her from the clutches of an evil minion. Along the way you can collect power-up items that could be used to destroy floors or walls, replenish health, bombs that help you jump higher, and even the occasional invincibility spell or two to help you through a tricky section in a level.

There are seven stages to play through in total. You may have to rename the executable files to get the game working on PCs that do not have native Japanese text support installed.

Winged Gear
ZAPShoot 'em up9.56 MBClick here to download

Winged Gear is another superb freeware title from Japan that could be described as a mix of Smash TV and SHMUP-type gameplay elements. The game is essentially a top down shooter where you have to guide a ship from room to room full of enemies to shoot at.

You're only allowed to exit a room once it has been cleared of every single hostile unit. There's a time limit that makes matter difficult, but it is usually replenished when you enter a new room.

Special items can be collected to increases your ship's firepower for a short while or replenish your bomb supply. The developers have also thrown in a two player mode as an added bonus.

Stair Dismount is a computer game made by Jetro Lauha of tAAt. It is a physics game where the goal is maximising the damage done to a 3D stick figure. The player causes damage by briefly applying a force to the figure to make it fall down a staircase.

The stick figure's falls are accompanied by various sound effects - cracks, wails and groans - as it makes its way to the bottom. Stair Dismount uses ragdoll physics, so the figure is very floppy as it falls, like a ragdoll.

The game was first published in Assembly 2002, where it won the first prize in the game development competition. The newest version, 1.0.3, is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Originally a game for the Spectrum, the Head Over Heels remake by Graham Goring and Tomaz Kac is faithful in every way but with new graphics to entice a new generation of gamers.

The player is required to alternate between two characters often in order to solve perplexing puzzles, each with their own special skills and abilities. Head can jump twice as high and fire doughnuts, while Heels is able to carry objects using a bag.

Feign

Feign is a clever maze game that is similar to Mike Inel's Where and Hazard: The Journey of Life, in which players are instructed to find the nine missing people who have hid themselves inside a network of rooms and corridors. If you lose count of how many people you have found, standing still in one spot will cause a text that displays your current progress to appear on screen.

Legend of Princess, The
Joakim SandbergPlatformer9.56 MBClick here to download

The Legend of Princess is a 2D platformer created by the developer of Chalk and the Noitu Love series, where players get to step into the shoes of a tunic-wearing hero on a quest to rescue a kidnapped princess. As with most of Joakim's releases, there are plenty of memorable boss encounters to be had here.

Note that the game has only one playable level, although arcade veterans could technically replay the entire adventure at a higher difficulty setting by choosing a different set of starting equipment with each new try. Also, the chances of getting a rare blue or red gem increases if you defeat more enemies and avoid getting hurt too frequently.
