Dungeon Crawl
- Windows, Linux
Linley HenzellRPG3.44 MBClick here to download
(external link)

Linley's Dungeon Crawl is a roguelike game originally programmed by Linley Henzell in 1995. Crawl starts with the player's choice of one of twenty-six races: five different types of elves, two types of dwarves, humans, ogres, centaurs, merfolk and other beings. Racial selection sets base attributes, future skill advancement, and physical characteristics such as movement, resistances, and special abilities.

The player next chooses a character class from among twenty-eight selections. Together, class and race determine base equipment and skill training, though characters may later attempt to acquire any in-game skill. The Crawl skill system covers most abilities upon which adventurers might call, while training occurs through repetition of skill-related actions.

The goal of Crawl is to recover the Orb of Zot, hidden deep within a dungeon complex. To achieve this objective, characters must visit various dungeon branches, such as the Orcish Mines or The Lair, which often branch further in to additional areas, like the Elven Halls or The Swamp. Dungeon maps in Crawl persist as the player moves between levels.

Dungeon Maker
WishboneRPG79.8 MBCurrently unavailable

Dungeon Maker is a role playing game creation engine inspired by maze exploration games like Bloodwych, Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. The original idea behind it's development was to remake these games in 3D while maintaining the classic gameplay they offered. An editor will be included in the final version when it is released.

There are a few maps already implemented including the classic Dungeon Master game.

Adam GattRPG0.49 MBClick here to download

In DungeonMinder, you play as an invisible fairy tasked with assisting an adventurer as he makes his way into the catacombs in search of treasure. This requires casting spells which immobilize enemies, increase the adventurer's stats or even change the shape of dungeon walls and floors.

Casting spells require one of the three types of mana, with a list of nine spells readily available for review at the press of the tab key. You regain mana by staying in close proximity to the hero, and whenever you are out of range the power text will change color from white to red.

Ethereal Dreams
(demo)
Dragonfly StudiosRPG53.0 MBClick here to download

Ethereal Dreams is a short RPG game with original artwork, sprites, backgrounds and an air of professionalism unseen in most amateur RMXP creations. Turn-based battles, spells, quests, a multitude of equipments and items can all be found in this effort.

Random battles are determined by an indicator called the encounter orb. This round object shown at the bottom left of the screen turns from green to red at a quicker rate when you're traveling on certain terrains which are likely to cause noise. An example of this is when your party is walking on puddles of water. A journal is used to record notes and details, with comprehensive bestiary information written by the characters themselves.

The main development team consists of female artists and programmers. This is an early build, and players will be notified when they've reached the end of the demo.

Exit Fate
SCFRPG148 MBClick here to download

Exit Fate is a new full-length RPG from Origami, creator of the well-received RPGMaker effort Last Scenario. The game not only features standard 2D battle encounters but boasts a tactical strategy mode as well, in which players must assume control over legions of troops, issue commands and lead their armies to a crushing victory. Bonus items are awarded for good results, especially if the fight ends quickly with minimal losses to your side.

A new addition is the bribe system, allowing players to avoid potentially dangerous encounters by using the local currency as a bargaining device. Use the C key to confirm your selections, or press the X key to cancel your choices.

The magic system is also a slight departure from most common RPGs. You earn mana points as the battle progresses, meaning that most spells can only be cast after several turns. The number of times a spell can be used in each battle is limited, but unused healing spells are cast automatically to restore the health of party members after battle.

Press the Left Alt and Enter key to switch between full screen and windowed mode. This game comes highly recommended if you're a big fan of RPGs, and wouldn't mind a couple of ripped sound effects, music and familiar-looking tilesets.

Favored, The
Joseph LarsonRPG0.15 MBClick here to download

The Favored is basically a remake of robotfindskittens with some changes to the original rules, created by Joseph for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge. The game involves collecting rabbits by walking over them, then depositing enough of the creatures at the exit point so that the passage to the next level can be opened.

You can only carry a maximum of four rabbits while walking around, and there is also the danger of accidentally grabbing the one bunny that has the power to strike you down. Had the game included some element of strategy to increase the chances of avoiding the all-powerful bunny, then Joseph could have a winner in his hands.

Generic Slash: Dismal Depths
Alex MayRPG4.13 MBClick here to download

As the title hints, Generic Slash: Dismal Depths is a simple action-RPG with a battle system much like the one found in Square's Mana series. Hack at enemies to make them yield riches, then grab it to barter for more HP when standing on tiles with a yellow swirling symbol.

Ghosts of Aliens
Swordofkings128RPG82.2 MBClick here to download
(external link)

Ghosts of Aliens is a full-length RPG which has been in production for nearly an entire year, featuring music by one of the developers credited with creating the post-cyberpocalyptic basketball epic, Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. Playing as the ghost of an alien named Atum, the story tells the tale of this restless soul who is given another chance at life, granted that he undertakes a quest to defeat the five Doom Beasts and save the world of Appalathia.

Use the Z key to run or select a menu option, and press the X key to cancel a choice or bring up your inventory screen. Press the left alt and enter key at the same time to switch between windowed and full screen mode. Progress can be saved at any time.

Combat is mostly negligible, as enemies encountered during the early part of the game only requires two hits or less before surrendering to you. Bosses can be easily defeated using your strongest Magle, while Quencheleth are readily available for purchase from item shops located in towns scattered all over Appalathia. There is however one particular dungeon that will most likely cause excruciating frustration, since entering this area inside a tree will end your adventure in less than two seconds if you're not equipped with the Mark IV blocker. In here, players would have to be mindful of their steps as well, as touching traps would pretty much wipe out all party members without warning.

Ghosts of Aliens isn't without faults and bugs, but anyone who is willing to persevere might find a couple of pleasant surprises to be had with this adventure. The RPG Maker 2000 Font Patch can be used to fix font display problems, but note that the program doesn't come with an uninstaller.

Guardian of Paradise
BusterRPG5.19 MBClick here to download
(external link)

Guardian of Paradise is a fun little Zelda-ish game by Buster, who you may know as the creator of Akuji the Demon. GoP casts you as Tela, a boy whose sister has fallen ill. Nobody knows what's wrong with her, so there seems to be no cure, but legends tell of healing waters in Paradise, so Tela sets out to find the fabled land and save his sister. He encounters elemental spirits along the way, which provide magic, and the basis for the game's puzzle system.

Please download and apply the english translation patch over the original file as well.
