Shift 4

In Shift 4 you're in control of an astronaut whose ship was attacked by a giant squid, forcing our protagonist to make an emergency landing at the closest planet. Waking up to find your family members missing, you decide to explore a deserted facility nearby and search for clues about their current whereabouts.

This particular episode is a little more challenging than previous releases, since players are required to switch between two or more characters often to solve some of the harder puzzles. New gameplay elements such as gravity and contact-sensitive switches are introduced at a steady pace, which is a boon considering that the map is a lot less linear and there is a bit of backtracking to do as well.

Originally a game for the Spectrum, the Head Over Heels remake by Graham Goring and Tomaz Kac is faithful in every way but with new graphics to entice a new generation of gamers.

The player is required to alternate between two characters often in order to solve perplexing puzzles, each with their own special skills and abilities. Head can jump twice as high and fire doughnuts, while Heels is able to carry objects using a bag.

Nezumiman
FishmanPlatformer18.1 MBClick here to download

Nezumi man (Rat man) is a 2D platformer created in the same style as early Megaman games, where you are in control of a rodent who has to defeat the evil Dr. Gyoniku and his henchmen. Ratman can jump, shoot, slide, and earn special abilities by beating the boss characters in each of the eight levels included.

A hidden bonus chapter can also be unlocked once you've completed the entire game, although it doesn't really take more than two hours to achieve that feat if you're already accustomed to playing difficult platformers by now. The save feature will come in handy if you need a short break or two between sessions as well. You can resize the application window by using the configuration file included in the game folder.

OddbobShoot 'em up6.24 MBClick here to download

Squid Yes! Not So Octopus! is an arena shooter created by the developer of War Bus and the Tempest-inspired G-Force. Alien robots from the planet Thwip are invading the home of a mutated radioactive squid, so you must assume control over this deadly creature and drive back the invasion with your patented beams of electro death.

You earn a point for every minute you survive in the game. The enemy assault last a whole eight minutes, and if you manage to make it past that point then the aliens will concede defeat and return to their homeworld, allowing you to have your cup of tea in peace and serenity once again.

W*H*B
Bob SmithPuzzle0.02 MBClick here to download

W*H*B is a puzzler that resembles Damien Clarke's Bloxorz in many ways, although this version features configurable button settings, great chiptunes and lovely retro graphics that the original had never offered. The game also doesn't punish you as severely for making mistakes, with the screen flashing red if your next move could cause the block to fall off the map.

An emulator may be required to play W*H*B, assuming that you don't own a working ZX Spectrum anywhere around the house. ZX Spin is a free emulator that works well enough with the game. It is also recommended that players reconfigure the key settings to their preferences before starting the first puzzle, since buttons are placed too far away in the default configuration for one hand to handle.

There are forty levels to play in total.

Minimal Yahtzee
Gary WarnePuzzle0.04 MBClick here to download

The objective of Minimal Yahtzee is to score the most points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. The dice can be rolled up to three times in a turn to try to make one of the thirteen possible scoring combinations.

A game of Yahtzee consists of thirteen rounds during which the player chooses which scoring combination is to be used in that round. Once a combination has been used in the game, it cannot be used again.

Each of the scoring combinations has a different point value, some of which are fixed values and others of which have the cumulative value of the dice. A Yahtzee is a five-of-a-kind and holds the game's highest point value of 50.

ro9
Justin SmithRPG1.41 MBClick here to download

ro9 is a turn-based role-playing game in which you get to control the actions of nine different characters at the same time, using only one set of controls for all. The objective here is to get all of your heroes down to the ninth and last level of the dungeon to loot the treasure, although you can still win if some of them succumb to their injuries before reaching the goal.

There are three types of monsters in each level. Humanoids are easy to defeat, while animals or creatures take a couple more shots to kill. Bosses are the strongest, and will take quite a beating before they drop an ankh. Collecting an ankh resurrects all rogues that died on the same dungeon level.

The basic strategy here is to win enemy encounters and increase your level before proceeding down the stairs, indicated by the number of yellow squares inside the window of each hero. The red outline that surrounds each view shows the amount of damage a character has taken, and players are advised to look for a health potion if it starts to turn bright red.
