FreeCol is an open version of Colonization, a Civilization-like game in which the player has to conquer the new world. You start the game with one vessel and two colonists. In the beginning you'll be able to send ships back to Europe in order to sell the goods you've produced or to bring back some colonists. Getting colonists into the new world is an important aspect of the game as each turn takes one year and later on even one season and as a result colonies don't grow as rapidly as they do in Civilization. You can pay colonists to come to the new world or you can attempt to persuade them with the religious freedom of your people in which case they will hop on your vessels for no money at all. Another important aspect is trade, the source of all income apart from Inca and Aztec gold. In a land filled with precious resources it is important to build your colonies at the right location and to place crafstmen where they belong. This is not only to have an income but also to be able to live off the land when you can no longer count on the support of Europe. Through all this you'll have to decide whether or not you want to live next to the native americans peacefully. They can teach your colonists new skills that cannot be taught anywhere else and they will offer you goods in case you choose to treat them as your friends. On the other hand, their villages can be attacked and their valuable goods can be taken from them and sold in Europe. Other European forces are also busy occupying their piece of the new world. Should their borders go too far then take over some of their colonies by force because they wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing to you. The object of Colonization is to declare your independence and survive an attack of the King's forces. Before declaring your independence you need to have the majority of the people behind you. This can be done by promoting free speech and by providing a strong governmental system.

![]() | Trilby's Notes ![]() (mature content) | Yahtzee | Adventure | 2.47 MB | Click here to download |
Trilby's Notes is the latest effort by Ben Croshaw, featuring his best work to date in terms of graphics and writing. There are considerably more locations to explore this time around, but a strange addition is the use of a text parser for interaction commands. All actions must be typed into an input box, and some guesswork is required to figure out the exact sentence that the game accepts in certain situations.

![]() | Facade ![]() - Windows, Mac (mature content) | Michael Mateas, Andrew Stern | Adventure | 167 MB | Click here to download (external link) |
Facade is an artificial intelligence experiment by Michael Mateas and Andrew Stern, an attempt to move beyond traditional branching or hyper-linked narrative to create a fully-realized, one-act interactive drama. Within this architecture they have built a dramatically interesting, real-time 3D virtual world inhabited by computer-controlled characters, in which the player experiences a story from a first-person perspective. The character you play is a longtime friend of Grace and Trip, an attractive and materially successful couple in their early thirties. During an evening get-together at their apartment that quickly turns ugly, you become entangled in the high-conflict dissolution of Grace and Tripfs marriage. No one is safe as the accusations fly, sides are taken and irreversible decisions are forced to be made. By the end of this intense one-act play you will have changed the course of Grace and Tripfs lives, motivating you to re-play the drama to find out how your interaction could make things turn out differently the next time. Somewhere between a video game and a drama, Facade takes advantage of voice acting and a 3-D environment, as well as natural language processing and other advanced artificial intelligence routines to provide a robust interactive fiction experience. Using full typed sentences the player can coach the couple through their troubles or drive them to be more distant from each other. This work is unlike hypertext narrative or interactive fiction to date in that the computer characters actively perform the story without waiting for you to click on a link or enter a command. Interaction is seamless as you converse in natural language and move and gesture freely within the first-person 3D world of Grace and Tripfs apartment. AI controls Grace and Tripfs personality and behavior, including emotive facial expressions, spoken voice and full-body animation. Furthermore, the AI intelligently chooses the next story 'beat' based on your moment-by-moment interaction, what story beats have happened so far, and the need to satisfy an overall dramatic arc. The player can take an active role in the conversation, pushing the topic one way or another to provide an interactive stage-play. These stage-plays are saved as scripts which can be saved after the game is finished.

![]() | Gravitron ![]() | X-0ut | Shoot 'em up | 6.65 MB | Currently unavailable |
X-0ut returns with a brand new shooter entitled Gravitron, though this one requires a little more tact as it is actually based on Thrust. Instead of transporting pods into the skies you now have to destroy reactors while saving any spacemen wandering on the surface of the planet. Switch to mouse controls by pressing the tab key when the main menu is shown. Activate the shields next to a fuel pod to fill up your tank. Progress is saved using a pass phrase, plus the nifty level editor facilitate user creations quite well. Expect more content to be posted in the near future.
